One year ago, we were anxiously awaiting the moment that would take us from a couple and turn us into a real-live family. I was so miserable, giant and pregnant with the worst case of pregnancy-induced carpal tunnel in the entire world, I think.
I hadn’t dilated past a three in as many days, and her heart rate was dropping with each contraction, so the doctor decided that a c-section was in order. I had already prepared myself for this eventuality so there wasn’t anything traumatic about it and everything went really smoothly. After about an hour, we had an angry little elf with us!
This weekend, to congratulate ourselves for raising a fun, funny, sweet and silly little girl for a whole year, we threw ourselves a party. Oh, also we gave her a birthday cake. I mean let’s be honest, first birthday parties are for parents. Babies have no idea what’s going on.
We had a Dinosaurs and Donuts theme because it was the easiest thing I could think of but still fun. I have a day job, a social life and a family so I definitely don’t have time to also be an expert party planner. More power to the moms who are out there Pinteresting the hell out of their kids’ first birthday parties. I thought I would be that mom. Turns out I’m more of an “Amazon the hell out of that birthday party” kind of mom.
The day before the party, I ordered some donuts, kolaches and coffee from Shipleys, went to Party City and supermarket sweeped some dino decorations. I made sure we had champagne, beer and orange juice for mimosas and man-mosas and we were all set!
